Today, Saturday 10 May, the National Gallery reopens the Sainsbury Wing entrance, launching a new chapter in its 200th anniversary celebrations.

Designed by Selldorf Architects with heritage experts Purcell, the reimagined space offers a refined and welcoming experience at the heart of Trafalgar Square.
A new civic space leads to a spacious, double-height foyer filled with natural light.

Clear glazing replaces the original dark glass, offering views into the Gallery and the historic Wilkins building. Inside, a 12-metre 16K screen brings masterpieces vividly to life.
On the ground floor, Bar Giorgio, an espresso bar by acclaimed chef Giorgio Locatelli, welcomes visitors.

Locatelli's restaurant is situated on the mezzanine, alongside a new bookshop and event spaces.
Paula Rego’s Crivelli’s Garden returns to its original home, while the Pigott Theatre reopens with a refreshed design and improved accessibility.

Crafted from elegant and sustainable materials, the new spaces reflect both the Gallery’s heritage and its forward-looking vision.
Supported by longstanding benefactors including The Linbury Trust and The Headley Trust, the Sainsbury Wing is now set to welcome millions more visitors with renewed brilliance.
