The world of yacht design has long been a stage for bold ideas, but few concepts approach the scale and ambition of Pangeos.

Developed by Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini and his studio, this extraordinary vessel proposes something far beyond traditional superyacht thinking.

With a footprint larger than many small cities, Pangeos is a floating ecosystem envisioned to carry tens of thousands of guests in complete autonomy. It is powered by clean energy and designed for long-term seaborne living.

Shaped like a giant sea turtle, the vessel would measure approximately 550 metres in length and over 600 metres at its widest point. If built, it would become the largest floating structure ever constructed.

The vessel is designed to accommodate up to 60,000 residents and visitors across a network of private villas, luxury apartments, beach clubs, green spaces, commercial areas and internal ports for tenders and aircraft.

A central structure would offer hotels, shopping promenades and public spaces, creating a complete living and leisure environment at sea.

One of the most compelling aspects of the project is its commitment to sustainability. Pangeos would be powered by nine electric engines supported by an array of solar panels and wave energy converters.

Its cruising speed, estimated at five knots, is deliberately slow to support long-term, emission-free operation. The design promotes environmental responsibility without sacrificing comfort or elegance.

Construction would require an entirely new shipyard infrastructure. The proposed site is located along the Red Sea coast near King Abdullah Port in Saudi Arabia.

To support the enormous base of the structure, over one square kilometre of sea would need to be dredged and enclosed to create a dry dock large enough to build the hull. Once completed, the area would be flooded to release the vessel.

The cost of construction is estimated at eight billion dollars, and the timeline for completion could stretch to eight years.

While the project has not yet begun construction, Lazzarini Design Studio has launched an early-stage digital version of Pangeos in the metaverse, offering virtual real estate through NFTs.

This initiative is designed to engage prospective investors and luxury visionaries, allowing them to explore the concept before committing to its physical development.

Whether or not Pangeos reaches the open sea, the concept has already reframed expectations within the world of ultra-luxury travel.

It proposes a future where long-distance living, slow exploration, and environmental stewardship can coexist on a vessel that is as much a destination as a mode of transport.

For individuals who view the ocean not as a boundary but as a place to belong, Pangeos may offer the most forward-thinking address imaginable.
